Abstract

BACKGROUND:

Current evidence suggests that distinct scapular morphologies may predispose patients to a rotator cuff tear. The objective of this longitudinal study was to evaluate the relationship between symptomatic degenerative cuff tears and different radiographic acromial characteristics, including acromion shape, indices (acromial index [AI], critical shoulder angle [CSA]), and acromial spur.

CONCLUSIONS:

The presence of an acromion spur is strongly associated with full-thickness cuff tear. Higher AI and CSA are associated with a full-thickness tear but not with partial tears. The type of acromion is not related to cuff tear.

 

Resumen
ANTECEDENTES:

La evidencia actual sugiere que las distintas morfologías de la escápula pueden predisponer a los pacientes a un desgarro del manguito rotador. El objetivo de este estudio longitudinal fue evaluar la relación entre los desgarres sintomáticos degenerativos del manguito y diferentes características acromiales radiográficas, incluyendo la forma acromion, índices (índice acromial [AI], el ángulo crítico del hombro [CSA]), y el espolón acromial.

CONCLUSIONES:

La presencia de un espolón en el acromion está fuertemente asociado con el grosor del desgarre del manguito. Superior AI y CSA están asociadas con un desgarro de espesor total, pero no con desgarros parciales. El tipo de acromion no está relacionado con desgarro del manguito.
